Van Buren--- Alphena Gendreau Latham, 91, peacefully entered into eternal life on February 6, 2023 in Van Buren. She was born November 11, 1931, a daughter of the late Eddie Gendreau and Alice (Clavette) Gendreau.
Alphena was educated in Lille schools, then received her associate degree in Business from Northern Maine Technical College, Presque Isle. Alphena had a formidable sense of humor, style, and dress! She was exceptionally gifted for doing hand work, as demonstrated by her knitting, crocheting, crewel, needlepoint, and tatting done throughout her life. She will be remembered especially for her "Crocheted Angels," which her family and friends continue to hold and cherish. Her love of visiting garage sales with her sisters, "Les filles a Ti Day (Eddie)," as they merrily sang the song written by her sister Germaine on their way to Yard Sales. Alphena was an "Army Wife" and had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and Egypt during those years while stationed in Germany and Italy.
She is survived by her only son, Mark of Jacksonville, FL; two grandchildren, Claire and Jared of Jacksonville, FL; three great grandchildren, Austin, Zayden and Sophia of Missouri; one sister, Mary Ann Chasse (Gerald) of Van Buren; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Alphena was predeceased by six sisters, Rhea (Ned), Orena (Gilbert), Germaine (Adrian), Gladys (Aurel), Lucienne and Ernestine; three brothers, Conrad (Blanche), Hector, and Percy (Alice).
Alphena's family extended their deepest appreciation to the physicians, nurses and staff of Borderview Rehab & Living Center for their compassionate and dedicated care during Alphena's stay.
In keeping with Alphena's wishes, funeral services will be held privately and at the convenience of her family. Arrangements are a service of Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren.
