Van Buren--- Anthelm Gagnon, 93, entered into rest peacefully Saturday, August 25, 2018, at a Van Buren healthcare facility. He was born December 8, 1924 in Van Buren, a son of the late Henry and Melvina (Michaud) Gagnon.
Anthelm enlisted with the US Army, Artillery Forces, during World War II and served overseas. Following his Honorable Discharge, he returned to Van Buren where he started his own business. A&G Woodworking was a custom woodshop which specialized in custom windows, doors, and he also fabricated and constructed many potato sprayers and hundreds of potato barrels over his fifty years of business. Anthelm was a Charter Member of Gateway Federal Credit Union and a life member of American Legion, Post #49, 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, #1635, and a life member of the VFW, Caribou. He was an avid hunter and, rest assured, there was a deer hanging off his shed every fall. In addition, he enjoyed helping during harvest season at several area potato farms.
He is survived by: one daughter, Gerri Plourde of Portland; one son, Glenn Gagnon of Van Buren; one sister, Leona Ayotte; four brothers, Gerald, Percy, Edgar, Leo James, and Henry Gagnon Jr.; 6 grandchildren, Stephanie, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Alain, Justin and Trisha; several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Anthelm was predeceased by a son Allen Gagnon in 2001, and several siblings.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Van Buren. Relatives and friends may greet the family Thursday morning, 8:30-9:30 AM at Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
