December 14, 1931 – September 16, 2025
Madawaska--- Bernice Deschaine, 93, peacefully passed away and into the loving arms of her late husband on September 16, 2025, at a Madawaska healthcare facility. She was born December 14, 1931 in St. David, a daughter of the late Ernest and Celina (Cote) Lagasse.
Bernice was an avid volunteer for several local organizations and churches and was a long-time member of the Daughters of Isabella. She was a devout Catholic and never missed a weekend Mass, and was a former alter server, at St. David Church. Bernice was a crafter and made sure everyone in her family had a pair of pichous. Rarely idle hands, she also entertained herself with many crafts and puzzles. Bernice loved her grandchildren and always took advantage of creating a huge feast during their visits.
She is survived by three children, Linda Gerber and husband Terry of Indiana, Donald Deschaine and his wife Donna of Tennessee, Louise Riddle and her husband Kenneth of Sanford; a daughter-in-law, Doreen Deschaine of Madawaska; siblings, Omerine Clavette, Percy Lagasse, Ernestine St. Jarre, and Jackie Frugale; several half siblings, twelve grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Bernice was predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Willard Deschaine in 1992, a son Robert Deschaine in 2024, and siblings, Wilfred Lagasse, Verna LeBlanc, Reed Lagasse.
Bernice's family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at Ridgewood Estates for the dedicated and compassionate care of Bernice during her stay.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Friday, September 26, 2025, at St. David Church, St. Daivid. Relatives and friends may greet the family Friday morning 8:30 – 9:30 AM at Lajoie Funeral Home, 114 – 10th Ave., Madawaska. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
