Madawaska--- Bernice R. Martin, 88, died January 15, 2023, at a Madawaska healthcare facility. She was born November 26, 1934 in Grand Isle, a daughter of the late Alcide and Josephine (Currier) Martin.
Bernice was a longtime cook in the Madawaska High School cafeteria for over 26 years, until her retirement. Even after retirement, she continued to interact with her community at her daughter's store, Morin's Variety, where she loved to chat with all the regular customers visiting. An avid knitter, she could knit several pairs of pichous in a single evening and her crafts are lovingly cherished throughout her family. Bernice was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne, St. Agatha, and Daughters of Isabella, Madawaska, and a longtime parishioner of St. Agatha Catholic Church.
She is survived by: six children, Norma Morin and her husband Maurice of St. David, Patricia Martin of Madawaska, Judy Powers and her husband Ricky of Virginia, Richard Martin Jr. and his wife Jean of Madawaska, Carol Rolnik and her companion Mike Piper of Gray, and Wayne Martin of Ellsworth; four brothers, Gilman Martin, Richard Martin Robert Martin, and John Lagasse; two sisters, Noella Gatten and Marilyn Beaupre; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Bernice was predeceased by her husband of almost 50 years, Richard G. Martin in 2004, three children, Louise, and infants Viola and Steven, and two brothers, Bert and Raymond Martin.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, St. Agatha. Relatives and friends may greet the family Friday evening 6 – 8 PM at Lajoie Funeral Home, 114 – 10 th Ave., Madawaska. Spring interment will be in the parish cemetery.
