Grand Isle---Mathieu "Bernie" Levasseur, 74, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, November 30, 2012. He was born in Grand Isle on September 21, 1938, the son of Lewis and Irene (Devost) Levasseur. Following his graduation from Madawasaka High School in 1957, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in Italy and Germany as a helicopter crew chief. Upon his return to Grand Isle in 1964, he joined the National Guards in Fort Kent and was with them for 37 years, retiring as first sergeant. Bernie retired from Fraser Papers in 2000 where he worked as a security guard for many years. He was a past commander and a lifelong member of the American Legion Post 147 of Madawaska. He was a communicant of St. Gerard Parish and a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #8414 of Grand Isle. After retirement, Bernie and his wife, Patricia enjoyed vacationing during the winter months in Florida, where he spent much time playing golf. Bernie was proud of being able to return to Italy two years ago with his two sons. He is survived by loving wife of 51 years, Patricia (L'Italien) Levasseur of Grand Isle; two sons, Michael B. Levasseur of Springvale, and Wayne D. Levasseur and his wife Monik of Edmundston; two brothers, Edward Levasseur and his wife Jackie of Madawaska, Joel Levasseur of Damariscotta; several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, and one brother, Fr. Angelo Levasseur. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at the St. Gerard Church in Grand Isle.
