Obituary

Fort Kent--- Cora Massey, 90, peacefully passed away April 13, 2024, at a Brewer healthcare facility, with her family at her side. She was born April 25, 1933, in Fort Kent, a daughter of the late Leo and Lilly (Deprey) Caron.

Cora worked on her father's farm along with her siblings as a young girl. As she got older, she went to work at former Claude's Restaurant, where she met the love of her life, Gerald Massey.  Together they moved to Massachusetts for work and married in 1953. Several years later, their family began with the birth of twins, and they returned to their beloved hometown of Fort Kent in 1959. Cora and Gerald bought and operated a convenience store in 1966, Jerry's Groceries, until Jerry's passing in 1976.

Cora dedicated her life to the care of people. She was a CNA at the local hospital for many years and cared for countless foster children, many of whom continued to be part of her family through adulthood, including James Gilbert and Donald St. Peter. Cora eventually turned her home into a boarding home, and cared for many elderly people, including her late sister, Rinette, during their illnesses or final days. She continued her boarding home until she fell ill, but always worked hard her entire life to care for her many friends and family.

She is survived by two children, James Massey and his wife Judy of Massachusetts, and Joyce Gagnon and her husband Ronald of Levant; one sister, Viola Caron of Fort Kent; five grandchildren, Kelly, Sarah, Melissa, Meyesa, and Jesse; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild on the way; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Cora was predeceased by her husband of 23 years, Gerald Massey in 1976, and three siblings, Rella Ouellette, Rinette Caron, and Milton Caron.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Thursday, April 18, 2024, at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Relatives and friends may greet the family Wednesday evening 6 – 8:00 PM and Thursday morning 8:30-9:30 AM at Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home, 14 E. Main St., Fort Kent. Spring interment will be in the parish cemetery.
