Van Buren--- Daniel R. LaPointe, 88, peacefully passed away Monday, May 11, 2026, at a Caribou hospital, following a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born March 21, 1938, in Cyr Plantation, a son of the late Joseph “J.R.” and Aurore (LaPierre) LaPointe.

Dan graduated from St. John’s Prep in MA and went on to the University of Maine at Orono, achieving his bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering. Upon his return to his beloved St. John Valley, Dan was self-employed as a potato grower and shipper in Van Buren and Cyr Plantation.

Dan was a business and civic leader in his community and state for many years, contributing time and energy to numerous civic and volunteer organizations including Vice President of Maine Potato Growers, Inc., Vice President of the National Potato Council, Supervisor of St. John Valley Soil and Water Conservation District, President of Maine Farm Bureau, Chairman of the Van Buren Housing Authority, Chairman of Maine Acadian Heritage Council, Director of Economic & Community Development for the Town of Van Buren, Financial Chairman of Le Club Français and a Member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was inducted into the Maine State Franco American Hall of Fame in 2012. He will be remembered for his love of family, farming and community.

He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Marie-Paule (Devost) LaPointe of Van Buren; three children, Dr. Julie Ann M. Bonanni and her husband Dr. Pierino of Albany, NY, Philip J. LaPointe and his wife Amy of Marysville, OH, and David R. LaPointe and his wife Trudi of Caribou, ME; one brother, Dr. Joseph R. LaPointe, Jr., and his wife Janice of Sunnyvale, CA, six grandchildren, Matthew, Stefania, Peter, Sarah, Tyler, and Kyle; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Church, Van Buren. Relatives and friends may greet the family Saturday morning 9 – 9:45 AM at the church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
