Obituary

Van Buren--- Daniel R. Smith, 61, died unexpectedly Wednesday, November 30, 2016. He was born June 3, 1955 in Grand Falls, NB, Canada, a son of the late Tom and Omerine (Ouellette) Smith, and a graduate of Van Buren High School and So. Maine Vocational Technical Institute.

Dan worked most of his life as a self-employed carpenter in Augusta, Waterville and surrounding areas. Returning to his hometown of Van Buren in 2013, he enjoyed being a local handyman. He was a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous, traveling to many meetings all over Maine to celebrate sobriety and assist others in their own recovery. He was a long-time member and Past Master of the Masons, Fairfield Siloam Lodge #92. Dan liked to go out to eat with his family and friends, riding motorcycles and snowmobiling.

He is survived by: two children, Calder Smith of Oakland and Danielle Thibodeau of Herman; five siblings, Bob Smith and his wife Karen, Michael Smith and his wife Donna, all of Van Buren, Sandra Smith of Fredericton, NB, Canada, Tommy Smith of Saco, and Pamela Smith of Lumberton, NJ; a grandson, Lucas; his ex-wife, Lisa Smith of Oakland; several aunts and uncles; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Van Buren. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Grand River Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan's name may be made to: AMHC: Residential Treatment Facility/Farm, PO Box 1018, Caribou, ME 04736. Arrangements are a service of Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren.
