Van Buren --- Donald J. Dumond, 83, died February 8, 2019, at a Van Buren healthcare center, following a short time of failing health. He was born January 26, 1936 in Hamlin, a son of the late Isidore and Mattie (Madore) Dumond.
Don enlisted with the US Army and served overseas during the Korean War. He last worked as the foreman and director of Van Buren Public Works and Highway Department for many years and he served as a councilman on the Van Buren Town Council for several years. Previously he farmed several years in Hamlin and Cyr Plantation before becoming a police officer for Van Buren Police Department, where he served as the assistant chief for several years.
He is survived by: his wife Dora (Martin) Dumond of Van Buren; two daughters, Rolande LeBlanc of Old Orchard Beach and Mona Stearns and her husband Richard of Thomaston; two brothers, Roderick "Dick" Dumond of Bangor and Ronald "Jim" Dumond and his wife Irene of Van Buren; three sisters, Mildred Munson of Presque Isle, Robertine Lachance of Waterville, and Jackie Demers of New Hampshire; four grandsons, Todd LeBlanc and his wife Paige of Colorado, Shane LeBlanc of California, Donald Charlson and his wife Cindy of Scarborough, and David Charlson and his wife Jennifer of Warren; thirteen great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by his first wife Irene (Daigle) Dumond; two brothers, Joseph and Stacy Dumond, and two sisters, Frances Levasseur and Verna Dumond.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday, June 3, 2019, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Main St., Van Buren. Relatives and friends may greet the family Monday morning 9 AM until the time of mass at the church. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation in Don's name may be made to: Borderview Activity Fund, 208 State St. Van Buren, ME 04785. Arrangements are a service of Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren.
