Obituary

Ashland----Donald L. Laveway, 98, passed away Wednesday, January 18,2017 at a Caribou hospital, following a brief illness. He was born March 12, 1918 in Presque Isle, a son of the late Fred and Susan (Michaud) Laveway, and was a 1936 graduate of Presque Isle High School.
Don worked as a supervisor of shipping and receiving at the former Presque Isle Air Base. In 1945 he was drafted by the US Army and served 1 & 1/2 years in the Finance & Separation Dept. Upon his return home, he was hired by the New England Telephone Co. as an installer repairman, where he worked for 33 years until his retirement in 1980. He was given the Ashland area as his work district. It was in Ashland where he met his sweetheart, Dolores "Sis", who was working as a "soda jerk" at the Ashland Drug store soda fountain. They were married in 1950 and in 1953 they built their home where they raised their family. He was her devoted husband and rarely were they seen apart.
Don was a devote Catholic and a faithful communicant at St. Marks' Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, snowmobiling and working in his cellar workshop doing wood crafts. From May to October he was happiest at their camp at Portage Lake spending time with family & friends. He and Sis enjoyed travelling and through the years travelled abroad, to Canada and, with the exception of Hawaii, all of the other states. In 2011, he & Sis were given the honor of being named as Ashland's "Citizens of the Year". Throughout his life, Don was very active in civic affairs. He served on the Ashland School Board, was a charter member of the Aroostook River Fish & Game Club, a trustee of the Ashland Community Library and was one of five men who were instrumental in the formation of the town recreation department and center. After his retirement, he was a volunteer, delivering for the "Meals on Wheels" program.
He is survived by: his loving wife of 66 years, Dolores "Sis" (Wakefield) Laveway of Ashland; a daughter, Mary Ellen Chasse and her husband David of Ashland; two sons, James Laveway and his wife Sharie of Ashland and David Laveway and his wife Linda of Grafton, NY; six grandchildren, Gregory Chasse & Rhonda Henault of New Hampton, NH, Douglas & Danielle Chasse of Ashland, Melissa (Chasse) Boutot and husband Matt, and Leslie (Laveway) Rafford and husband Mark of Portage Lake, Bruce Laveway and Kyle Bourque of Bowdoinham, ME and Daniel Baker of Deltona, FL.; and six great-grandchildren, who by Don's request, affectionately called him GG, Kolson, Blayne, Creed, Rochelle, Mckenna & Kalleigh.
Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by an infant brother, his five brothers, Richard, Elmer, Milton, Patrick and Frederick, and his sister Blanche Cook.
A mass of Christian burial, with the Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie officiating, will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at St. Marks' Catholic Church, Ashland.
