Obituary

Madawaska--Enid (Sleeper) Corey, 93, of Madawaska, Maine, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, following a brief illness. She was surrounded by her seven children.

She was born in Caribou, ME on July 29, 1925 to Joseph and Alma Sleeper.  Her early years were spent working side-by-side with her dad at Sleepers store in Caribou, ME.  This instilled a love for business that would never subside.  She married Robert Corey on August 20, 1951. Three years later with 2 ½ children in tow, they moved to Madawaska to pursue their dream of opening a business of their own. This is when Robert's Jewelry was established. Enid was truly Robert's partner, together they built a successful business. She held nothing back when it came to setting her kids on the "right path" and the whole family worked by their side. Hard work seemed to come easy to her and idle hands were unacceptable. She was completely devoted to raising children with strong work ethic and family values. She relished in their successes and they were her proudest accomplishment.  With great enthusiasm, Enid embarked on her own business venture in 1978, opening a card and gift store called Hi, Ma's.

The traditions she created have left an indelible mark on this family. The fireworks every Fourth of July (ironically, her favorite holiday), the enormous family dinners, baking fresh picked gigantic berry pies, making bread with the grandchildren patiently kneading the dough and packing picnics for anyone traveling.

Enid is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Alma (Meelan) Sleeper, her loving husband of 67 years, Robert Corey her sisters, Norma Merrill and Rosie Moses, her brother, Joseph Sleeper and her precious grandson, Robert Foster.

She is survived by her seven children, Jeffery and wife Kathy of Winslow, ME; Jolene and husband James Cleland of Edmundston, NB; Jean and husband David Foster of Johns Island, SC;  Jayne Johnston and her partner Randy Morrison of Bangor, ME;  Robert and wife Sylvie Corey of Madawaska, ME;  James and wife Amy Corey of Topsham, ME; Anne and husband Douglas Cyr of Madawaska, ME.

Her siblings, Mitchell and wife Florence Sleeper of Bangor, ME; Natalie Adamson of Franklin, MA; Nelson (Ike) Sleeper of Caribou, ME; Dottie and husband Mike Fitzgerald of New Sweden, ME; and sister-in-law Doris Sleeper.  Her 14 grandchildren Emily, Erin, Joseph, Billy, Leah, Maria, Amber, Corey, Jeffery, Sam, Alex, Emilia, James and Matthew; and six great-grandchildren, Lucas, Lydia, Cameron, Max, Claire and Owen.
