St. Francis--- Frederick "Fred" Hafford, 89, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2023. He was born April 28, 1933, in Allagash, a son of the late Fred and Jennette (Brownell) Hafford. Fred was raised in Allagash and settled with his wife to raise a family in St Francis, Maine.
Fred received his Honorable Discharge from the US Army, where he earned his black belt in Judo while serving in Japan. Fred spent many years working in the logging industry and ended his career there as a logging contractor before returning to college to finish his education. Fred graduated with a bachelor's degree in business from UMFK. He then went on to open and operate Frederick Hafford's Tax and Accounting Business, where he worked until the time of his stroke. Fred was proud of the distinction of enrolled agent he held.
Fred loved fishing and canoeing in the Allagash and on the St John River, by his house. He had a secret fishing spot at Michaud Farm.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife of almost 64 years, Theresa (Deschamps) Hafford; one daughter and three sons, Janet Gardner, Steven (Polly) Hafford, James (fiancée Roxanne) Hafford, and Mark (Shannon) Hafford; brothers, Hollis and Calvin Hafford; ten grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters.
A funeral with military honors will be held on July 8, 2023, at 10:00 am, at St. Charles Catholic Church, St. Francis. A gathering of friends and family to continue this celebration of Fred's life will follow at the St Francis Elementary School.
