Van Buren – Gerard M. "Babe" Cyr, 90, passed away peacefully December 18, 2024, at a Caribou hospital after a long illness.
Babe lived his whole life in Van Buren and was from a large farming family in which he cultivated his strong work ethic. Babe graduated from Van Buren Boys High School in 1951. After his father's sudden passing, Babe took over the family potato farm. He also owned Baker's Machine Shop and was a pulpwood dealer. He enjoyed singing and listening to religious music and was a proud member of the St. Bruno's Choir.
Babe is survived by his wife, Joyce (Belanger) Cyr and her three children. He is also survived by his five children. Three daughters, Pamela Stapleford and her husband Tom of Anchorage, Alaska, Michelle Cyr and her husband Lee of Gorham, Maine, Nicole Sturgis and her husband Jeff of Standish, Maine; two sons, Jeffrey and his wife Sue of Topsham, Maine, and Eric and his wife Kelly of Gorham, Maine. Babe is also survived by his six siblings, Rachel Cyr, Roger Cyr, Marilyn Wyman, Patricia Devine, Marjorie Isaksen, and Judy Hebrlee. He also had many grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Xavier and Cecile (Tardif) Cyr, Babe was predeceased by his son, Charles Cyr, brother Leo James Cyr, sisters Donaldine Bowman, Robertine Boivin, Lorraine Staunton, and Jeannine Cyr.
Babe lived a long life thanks to his faith in God and the people in Van Buren who cared for him. The family would like to thank Dr. Sherri Dumont for her care, patience and compassion.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for the late Babe and Joyce Cyr at 10 AM on Friday, May 30, 2025, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Church, Main St., Van Buren.
