Obituary

Gertrude spent her twilight years living with her daughter Wanda, granddaughter Jill, grandson-in-law Richard, and her beloved great-grandchildren Michael, Adrianna, Cianna, and Breiann. She cherished the time spent with her family and shared stories that bridged generations. Through these stories, she wove the golden threads of her past into the fabric of their future, creating a strong bond that would last for years to come. Each evening, as she enjoyed her beer and a sweet treat, Gertrude would unfold tales of yesteryears, imbuing these moments with the essence of a life fully lived. These stories, rich with history and love, became treasures for her great-grandchildren, heirlooms of wisdom and memory to carry forward. Her legacy was not only preserved but lovingly passed down, ensuring that the tapestry of her life would continue to inspire generations to come.

Gertrude Roy DuBois, a beloved matriarch whose warmth and resilience touched many, passed away peacefully at 97 of Conway, SC., on March 21, 2024. Gertrude's journey began on January 14, 1927, in the close-knit community of Fort Kent, Aroostook, Maine, where she was born to Damase Roy and Amanda Pelletier Roy. As the youngest sibling in a bustling household, her early years were filled with the rich tapestry of family life, surrounded by her brothers Leonid " Ned," Lionel, Roland, Walter, Albenie "Ben," and sisters Jeannette and Germaine, all of whom predeceased her.

Gertrude's story is one of enduring love and commitment, beautifully illustrated by her marriage to Arthur J. DuBois on September 19, 1946. Together, they embarked on a life filled with love, challenges, and triumphs, raising their four cherished children, Arthur "Sonny," Jr. Kenneth "Ken," Cynthia "Cindy," and Wanda, in East Hartford, CT. Their home was a hub of warmth, laughter, and love, reflecting Gertrude's dedication to her family.

The couple's retirement years were marked by idyllic winters in Tucson, AZ, and summers on the lake in Eagle Lake, ME, where they enjoyed nature's beauty and family and friends' company. Following Arthur's passing in 1994, Gertrude embraced life with vigor. Moving back to Connecticut after a period to be closer to her children following Sonny's passing in 2003. Gertrude's legacy extends beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy. All cherished her role as Memere, known for spoiling them with her stash of peanut butter cups and Snyder's pretzels, embodying the spirit of unconditional love.

Gertrude's resilience, kindness, and indestructible spirit were her hallmarks throughout her life. She will be remembered for her gentle strength, boundless kindness, and remarkable ability to love and accept everyone as if they were her own. Gertrude found joy in the simplest moments and was always ready with a welcoming table, able to feed an army with warmth and generosity. Her tenacious support for her family and friends and endless acceptance made her a cherished pillar in the lives of all who knew her.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Arthur, son Arthur "Sonny" DuBois Jr., and her siblings. She also felt the loss of her sons-in-law, Todd Lindsey and Richard Grote. Her vibrant spirit lives on through her children, Kenneth "Ken" DuBois, Cynthia "Cindy" DuBois Urso (Gaetano), and Wanda Grote; her daughter-in-law, Carmella DuBois; and her cherished grandchildren, Stacy DuBois Covey (Michael) and Jill Lindsey Wyatt (Richard). Gertrude's vibrant spirit lives on through her great-grandchildren, Michael, Adrianna, Cianna, Breiann, Liam, Mason, Riley, and Danielle, who brought immense joy into her life. She also had numerous nieces and nephews who all held a special place in her heart. Her remarkable journey will continue to inspire and guide future generations.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Gertrude's beautifully lived life will be Monday, October 7, 2024, at 10am at the St. Louis Church in Fort Kent.  Family and friends are also invited to greet the family that morning from 8:30am to 9:30am at Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home.  The family is inviting all whose lives she touched to come together in honoring her memory.
