Obituary

Van Buren--- Gordon C. Porter, 68, passed away on January 27, 2023, following a 5 month struggle with a rare aggressive lymphoma. He was born in 1954 in Caribou, son of the late Wallace and Thelma (Thibodeau) Porter.

Gordon loved the outdoors since an early age. He was involved in scouting and was proud to have earned the Eagle Scout award. He followed the Scout values throughout his life and guided others as a leader and Scoutmaster. He was a former Mason and former Knights of Columbus.

In early years, he was an EMT on the Van Buren Ambulance Department and also worked alongside his father at Porter's Transmission.  He later became a dental hygienist and it was there that he met his wife, Diane. They married and remained in Van Buren to raise their three children and be close to their aging parents.

Despite dealing with multiple health issues since childhood, he was always smiling, had a wonderful sense of humor, and held the philosophy that there was always someone worse off. He had a heart of gold, was generous to a fault, and made it his life mission to take care of the ones he loved. When he could no longer work professionally due to his health, he stayed home to care for his family. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was lovingly known as "Grampie" and could be seen taking them for walks, playing in the snow, frequenting playgrounds, and sneaking them treats.

He is survived by his cherished soulmate of 44 years, Diane (Powers) Porter; three children, Scott and his wife Mildred, Kay and her fiancé Vinny Sharpe, and Alex; one brother, Norman and his wife Paula; three grandchildren, Agatha, Brooklynn, and Liam; his in laws, Geneva Powers, Rudolph Powers and his wife Vivian, Beatrice Dumais and her husband Ralph, Lorraine Donahue and her husband Robert, and Ann Shackford; and several nieces and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by his in-laws:   Romeo and Gertrude Powers, Norman Powers, and Hobart Shackford.
