Van Buren--- Hurbain "Hurb" Cote, 71, died peacefully Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Maine Veterans Home, Caribou, with his loving family at his side, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born February 19, 1948 in Grand Falls, NB, Canada, a son of Azilda (Pelletier) Cote and the late Paul Cote.
Hurb enlisted with the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He proudly earned many distinctions during his years of service with the USMC, including the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat Valor, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal with Bronze Star, Vietnam Service medal with Three Bronze Stars, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, and several additional service ribbons and medals. He was a life member of the American Legion, Post #49, Van Buren, VFW, Post #9389, Caribou, and the DAV.
He last worked on the former Loring Air Force Base over 20 years for Loring Light & Power and Maine Public, and he was a long-time police officer and sheriff deputy of the Van Buren Police Department and Aroostook County Sheriff's Department. Previously he also worked several years for Van Buren Light & Power and in plumbing and heating. He enjoyed hunting and fishing during his spare time and loved to include his family and friends during his many outdoor expeditions. He adored his grandchildren and cherished their many visits making new memories.
He is survived by: his beloved wife of 48 years, Dorothy (Albert) Cote of Van Buren; his mother of Van Buren; two children, Kim Gendreau of Van Buren and Keith Cote and his wife Sarah of California; four siblings, Pauline Cote of Van Buren, Roy L. Cote and his wife Linda of California, Daniel Cote and his wife Barbara "Babs" of Van Buren Cove, and Leah Ayotte and her husband Steve of Standish; four grandchildren, Stephanie, Danika, Sebastian, and Brianna; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, Hurbain was predeceased by two siblings, Ivan and Joan Cote.
A graveside service with military honors will be celebrated at 2 PM on Friday, April 26, 2019, at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Lombard Road, Caribou. Arrangements are a service of Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren.
