Madawaska --- James E. "Edward" Dechaine, 96, passed away of March 25, 2019 at a Madawaska health care facility. He was born on July 30, 1922, son of the late Winnie Deschaine. Edward honorably served his country in the US Navy for 20 years. His military career spanned from WWII to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was wounded in combat and received a Purple Heart along with eight other medals. After retiring from the military, Edward was employed by High View Manor and worked as a Cook. He had a passion for cooking and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman who greatly enjoyed hunting and fishing. His favorite fishing companion was his dog. He owned many dogs in his life, but his favorites were his Boston Terriers. He enjoyed baseball and was a dedicated fan of the New York Yankees and was able to witness them win many championships in his lifetime. Edward is survived by his five children, Joel "Butch" Dechaine and his wife Micheline of Madawaska, Joanna Dechaine of Madawaska, Verna Dechaine of Madawaska, Vera Dechaine Ames of Bangor, and Dianna Shepherd and her husband John of Lisbon Falls; two grandchildren, Michael Dechaine and his companion Rebecca Russell and Jennifer Goodrich; three great-grandchildren, Eddie and Austin Dechaine and Makayla Goodrich; one brother, Alphy Cyr and his wife Viola of Connecticut; two sisters-in-law, Rinette and Rita Cyr of Connecticut; along with many nieces and nephews. Edward is predeceased by his beloved wife, Laurette (Lagasse) Dechaine, six siblings, Maurice Cyr, Freeman Cyr, Christopher Cyr Jr., Marie May Beaudry, Priscille Deschaine, and Patricia Carrier; and one granddaughter-in-law, Carrie (Michaud) Dechaine. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Monday, April 1, 2019 at the St. Thomas Church in Madawaska. Family and friends may call at the church from 9-9:45 before the service. In lieu of flowers contributions in Edward's memory may be made to the St. John Valley Associates, 291 Newberry Dr., Suite. 105, Madawaska, ME 04756.
