Grand Isle---Joel Z. Cyr, 80, passed away June 20, 2023, at a Madawaska health care facility.  He was born in Grand Isle on December 7, 1942, son of the late Albert and Laurette (Sirois) Cyr.  Joel graduated from Van Buren High school and entered the United States Army.  After his Honorable discharge in 1964, Joel worked at Fraser Papers for many years until his retirement.  He was a member and past Commander of the American Legion in Madawaska, Post 147.  He loved hunting, fishing, and gardening in his spare time.  He truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  He is survived by two sons, Steve Cyr and his wife Andrea of New Hampshire, Jesse Cyr and fiancé Deanna of Grand Isle; two daughters, Cindy Cyr of Bar Harbor, Debbie Whitson and her husband Roy of New Hampshire; four grandchildren, Lauren, Elliot, Josie, Dillon; three sisters, Nancy Halpin of California, Ella Gatcomb of Eagle Lake, Collette Bouchard and her husband Bob of Frenchville; many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by one grandson, Timothy Cyr; one sister, Ruth; two brothers, Glen and Paul.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am on Friday, July 28, 2023, at the St. Gerard Church in Grand Isle.  A private interment will be held at the Caribou Veteran's Cemetery at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joel's memory may be made to the Homeless Vets in Care of the American Legion, Post 147, 353 Main St., Madawaska, ME 04756.
