Obituary

New Canada - Johanna (Jo) Hutchins Madore died peacefully at The Aroostook House of Comfort on December 10th, 2025 with her family by her side after succumbing to Alzheimer's disease.  She was born on October 5,1946 in Portland, Maine and was the eldest child of the late Harold L. and Grace M. Hutchins.  She grew up in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and was a 1964 graduate of Pittsfield High School.  She had been an active Girl Scout and attended two Roundups as a teenager.  She attended both University of Vermont and Berkshire Community College and went on to work with the ARA Food Service in Newton, MA and then transferred to work at University of Maine at Fort Kent. There she met and married Larry Madore on November 8, 1976.

Jo worked for MSAD #27 for several years, before moving on to Community Health and Counseling Services until retirement in 2012. She had been an early member of La Leche in Fort Kent.  When Jo wasn't working, she dedicated her time to local Girl Scouts, snowmobiling with her family, crafting, attending many concerts and in later years her beloved cats and jigsaw puzzles were important to her.  She had an appreciation of the arts and was definitely the creative one of the family.  One of her favorite places was the Clark Art Museum in Williamstown, MA.  Following retirement, both Jo and Larry took up the ukulele, and they sang and played with the River Ukes and the Rockin' Ukes.  On weekends you would often find Jo playing Queen of Spades and Charlemagne with her in-laws, the late Joe and Yvette Madore. Jo loved cooking and baking (her kitchen was her domain) for family gatherings which were followed by rousing card games and fun.

Jo leaves her devoted husband, Larry Madore. She also leaves her daughter, Jill Madore of Fort Kent and daughter Lynn Cossaboom (Phil) of Madison, Maine and her grandson Evan Harlow.  She leaves her sister Holly Goodrich of Lanesborough, MA, her brother Price Hutchins of Lovell, Maine, and her sister Meg (Shannon) Broderick of Litchfield, Maine, cousins Donald and David Meeken, as well as several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all.  Family past and present were very dear to her. She was predeceased by her grandson Sam Sturgeon and her cousin Deborah Meeken Wright

The family would like to thank all the caregivers who helped Jo and the family for the past several years.  Each brought their talent and professionalism with every visit.  The family would like to especially thank Gary and Pauline Dumond for their enduring friendship which included boat rides, cookies, campfires and puzzles that Jo so appreciated.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2026. Details will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations in Jo's name may be made to All Things Become New, 3381 Aroostook Road, Eagle Lake, ME 04739 or The Aroostook House of Comfort, P.O. Box 867, Presque Isle, Me 04769.
