Van Buren & Waltham, MA---Rev. Joseph S. Chasse, S.M., age 91, of Framingham, MA, died Sunday, August 20, 2017 in Saint Patrick's Manor. He was born July 1, 1926 in Van Buren, Maine, the son of the late Belonie and Marie (DesRosiers) Chasse.
He graduated from Maryvale Seminary in Bedford in 1946 and took his First Profession on September 8, 1947 in Staten Island, New York. He then attended Marist College and Seminary in Framingham and was ordained into the priesthood on August 6, 1952 at St. Bridget's Church in Framingham, MA. He would later earn his Master of Education from Boston University.
Among numerous assignments he taught at Catholic Central High School in Detroit, MI, and at Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods, MI. He was the Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Lawrence, MA, Our Lady of Pity Parish in Cambridge, MA, and at St. Bruno-St. Remi Parish in his hometown of Van Buren, Maine. Fr. Chasse was a warm and welcoming man who counseled hundreds of parishioners throughout his vocation.
Besides his confreres in the Marist Community he is survived by his siblings, Aurelien Chasse of Houlton, Maine, Jeannine Lynch of Norwood, MA, Leola Ouellette of Peabody,MA, Sue Chasse of Van Buren, and Emilio Chasse of Liverpool, NY, and also leaves many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Fr. Lucien Chasse, Juliette Plourde, Stella Chasse, Muriel Violette, Lourdes Chasse, Therese Smith, Zelpha Collins and Zoel Chasse.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Van Buren. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects Tuesday morning 10 AM until the time of Mass. Memorial donations may be made to the Marist Mission Office, 27 Isabella Street, Boston, MA 02116. Arrangements are a service of Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren.
