IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph
Cyr
December 30, 1937 – April 5, 2021
Fort Kent--Joseph Milton Cyr 83, family man, problem-solver, inventor, and accomplished fly fisherman, died on Monday, April 5, 2021 at Mercy Home, in Eagle Lake, Maine. He was born in Guerette, Maine, on December 30, 1937. He was the third child of the late Sylvio Cyr and the late Irene Cyr (Sylvain), both of Sinclair, Maine. Affectionately known as "Mel" by family and "Joe" by friends and neighbors, he was a machinist and fabricator by trade having owned Cyr Metal Works for many years. He was also a foreman at Pinkham's lumber, and a mechanic in his earlier days. He enjoyed fishing, proudly made his fly-fishing lures, and spent many hours on his small fishing boat; much to the dismay of his loving wife, Dorothy "Dot" Cyr (Labonte), whom he was married to for 63 years. Joe was a loving family man. He adored his children and grandchildren. Mechanically brilliant and technically savvy, Joe handed these qualities down to his sons, Charles Joseph Cyr (who preceded him in death in 2018), Gary Michael Cyr (wife Michelle) of Simsbury, Connecticut, and Gregory Paul Cyr (partner Henry Garrard) of St. John, Indiana. They are creative problem-solvers in their own right. He dearly loved his daughter, Renee Marie Cyr (partner Richard Pelletier) of Eagle Lake, Maine, and whom when asked if he would be her angel when he died, said jokingly, "I'll hire seven angels to watch over her," making clear to us that he would be a leader even in death. He took extreme pride in his grandchildren Kayla Segady (Cyr), Mackenzie Cyr, Madison Cyr, Gabrielle Cyr, Noah Cyr, Jacob Cyr, Nicholas Cyr, Samuel Devoe, Andrew Devoe, Jaxon Devoe, Tatum Devoe, and Kory Devoe, who affectionately called him Grandpa. He was also incredibly proud of his adorable great-grandchildren Sienna and Alessia Segady. He dearly loved his mom Irene Cyr (deceased), he affectionately called "Bedenne," who with his older sister, Marylyn Levesque, and brother James Cyr (deceased), helped rear his younger brother Paul Cyr (deceased) and two younger sisters, Carlene Martin and Gloria Caron, after his father Sylvio's tragic death when he was 8. Joe was self-taught in motor mechanics and steel and tool fabrication. Joe created go-carts, trailers, wood splitters, farm equipment parts no longer being manufactured, and warehouse supply chain equipment. He was an accomplished toolmaker and was adept at using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and welding equipment. If you needed it, he would build it; if it didn't exist, he created it. He became an astute craftsman, all without formal education and something in which his family is incredibly proud. In Joe's later years, he began to lose the use of his legs due to muscular dystrophy and was relegated to a wheelchair. His devout feistiness and stubbornness had served him well during this time by allowing him to solve many mobility issues with creative solutions. He had a heart attack that was a turning point in the decline of his health last summer yet with lots of determination and grit successfully pulled through. His recent stroke showed us his independence and desire to live a life of quality and decided to forgo treatments for a better life in heaven. He was a model of strong will and sheer determination right up until the end of his journey here on earth. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many. Heartfelt thanks go to Northern Maine Medical Center for their compassionate care and exceptional nurses and staff, as well as Mercy Home staff of Eagle Lake, who provided much comfort, peace, and tranquility during his transition from this life into the next. Due to the current pandemic a funeral service will be held privately by the family. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home.
