Obituary

Fort Kent---Lucienne "Lucy" Belanger Plourde, 94, passed away on June 8, 2025, at a Fort Kent health care facility.  She was born in Wallagrass on December 29, 1930, daughter of the late Manzer and Pauline (Paradis) Belanger.

Lucy was a twin and the eldest of 14 siblings. Like many others from Fort Kent, she moved to Connecticut at a young age in search of work, hoping to support her family back home.

It was in Connecticut where she met her future husband, Reginald Plourde. They soon married and eventually settled down to raise three daughters. Their first child, Penny, was born with spina bifida, and Lucy devoted countless hours to caring for her—spending long days in hospitals and attending physical therapy sessions. What began as a medical necessity soon became a family routine, with all members involved in supporting Penny's care and development. Their family later grew with the births of their two younger daughters, Terry and Bonny.

As the children grew, Lucy returned to the workforce, applying her deep compassion and resilience as a social worker for the AmeriCorps VISTA program and the Aroostook Mental Health Center. She and Reggie also opened Chez Plourde Shoes, which Penny managed.

Lucy was also instrumental in her husband's political career, working tirelessly behind the scenes during his campaign for the Maine House of Representatives. Her hospitality became well known, hosting guests such as Governor Joseph Brennan, Secretary of State Mark Gartley, and future Governor Angus King, among many other dignitaries.

At home, Lucy's warmth and energy brought people together. Family and friends often gathered around her table for spirited card games in the evenings and lively Sunday breakfasts filled with conversation and laughter.

Throughout her life, Lucy was a passionate advocate—for her family, her community, and anyone in need. She was assertive when necessary, resourceful by nature, and always willing to speak up for those who couldn't. Her strength and compassion left a lasting impact on all who knew her, from close family to complete strangers.

She is survived by three daughters, Terry Michaud and her husband Richard of Dover, NH, Bonny Plourde-Tingley and her husband David of Madawaska, and Doreen Belanger Kulakowski and her husband Paul of Palmetto, FL; two grandchildren, Stephanie Michaud and her husband Steven Fellows of Dover, NH, and Lauren Wusterbarth and her husband Peter of Madawaska; two great grandchildren, Roland and Tristan Fellows; seven siblings, Theresa, Dolores, Gene, Roy, Roger, Leo "Bob", and Manzer.  Lucy was predeceased by her husband, Reginald C. Plourde; her daughter, Penny A. Plourde; her grandchild, Marsha Kulakowski; her siblings, Neil and William.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, 10 am on Monday, June 16, 2025, at the St. Louis Church. There will be no visiting hours.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Forest Hill Manor, Activities, 25 Bolduc Ave., Fort Kent, ME 04743.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home.
