Obituary

Madawaska--Lucretia Viola Bair O'Neal January 19, 1921 – November 19, 2020 Living two months short of 100 years, Lucretia Viola Bair O'Neal (Lu) was a strong, independent, loving, faith-filled woman. Born in Marion, Ohio to Burton W. and Viola L. Bair, Lucretia lived a laughter-filled life as a homemaker, seamstress, gardener, musician, and more.  At the age of 12, Lucretia performed on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour talent show playing the marimba. In 1933, she also played at the Chicago World's Fair, frequently sharing stories about this experience as she grew into her adulthood. Graduating from Granite City High in Belleville, Il, she lived during the Great Depression and married her soldier husband, Spencer O'Neal, in 1941. Being the wife of a career serviceman, Lu had to spend many of her early marriage days alone, raising her only daughter. Lucretia and Spencer traveled to all lower United States in their RV, living in California, Michigan, and Florida. In 2018, Lucretia cruised the Inside Passage of Alaska to complete all 50 United States and spoke of this trip fondly with family. Avid travelers, Lucretia and Spencer also enjoyed camping with the Rolling Rebels FMCA RV group. After the death of her husband, Lucretia moved to Maine to be with her daughter and grandchildren. Here and throughout the entirety of her life, she continued to crochet and knit, collect bears and other objects from her travels, play and enjoy the organ, and continued to play Bingo, Dominoes, and other board games with family and friends alike. Late into her life, her wit and story-telling abilities flourished, as she often recalled memories from 80 years past. She loved sharing her physical and emotional treasures with her great-grandchildren, often telling stories over supper. Recently, she completed her bucket list by traveling to Ireland and Hawaii with a tour group from WAGM-TV. She was a member of the Eastern Star since 1941, a member of St. John - St. Paul Anglican Church in Edmundston, NB, and an associate member of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in New Sweden, ME. Lucretia is survived by her daughter, Lois Muller and husband Paul; her grandchildren, Brian and wife Eileen, and Lisa Muller Nolan; her great-grandchildren, Andrew and wife Tasha, Lauren, Kristen, Stephen, Christian, Joseph, and Lillian; and her great, great-grandchildren, Matthew and Evelyn. In the Spring of 2021, Lucretia will be interred by her husband's side in Meadowlawn Cemetery in New Port Richey, Florida. A memorial service will be held at a future date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lajoie Funeral Home.
