Madawaska --- Marie May (Dumais) McDermott, 89, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2018, at a Madawaska nursing facility. Born on May 1,
1929
in Frenchville, ME, she was the daughter of the late Marie (Picard) Dumais and Henri Dumais. Her father was a prominent potato farmer and their family spent many years harvesting the crops, doing chores on the farm and raising farm animals. In her early years, she was educated in a one-room schoolhouse which still stands today. She graduated high school in 1947 from Notre Dame De La Sagesse in St. Agatha, Maine. On July 14, 1951, Marie married Donald Leo McDermott whom she met while working as a secretary at Fraser Paper, and together, Don and Marie raised three children. Marie enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing golf, bowling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, square dancing, snow tubing, boating, gardening, yoga and exercising. She and her husband celebrated life with 'the Lakers' at Long Lake. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and also the Four Seasons Trail Association where she enjoyed various outdoor activities. Marie was well loved by her grandchildren and regarded as a ruthless card shark, always ready to beat them in a few rounds of cribbage and rummy. She was renowned for her homemade chicken soup, jello salad concoctions
and
Brown Sugar Pie, which led to misadventures such as forgetting to stop at the Canadian border. She had an infectious "joie de vivre" that drew people, young and old, to her. Marie is survived by her sisters Priscilla Greenwood of Meriden, CT, and Therese Dumais of Madawaska, ME; brother Roland Dumais of Simi Valley, CA; son Mark McDermott and his wife Linda and son Kenneth McDermott of Madawaska ME; and daughter Kathleen Evans of Dover, NH. She is also survived by her dear companion, Lorn Dumont of Falls Church, VA, and by seven grandchildren, Jill McDermott and husband Santiago Herrera of Bethlehem, PA; Thomas McDermott of Portland, ME; Timothy McDermott of West Lebanon, NH; Chelsea Officer and husband Tim of Somerville, MA; Kayla Evans of Brighton, MA; David McDermott of Fort Kent, ME; and Shawn McDermott of Madawaska, ME. Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband Donald, her brothers Lawrence and Bertrand Dumais, and her sister Doris Chamberland. A special thank you to Lorraine Dumont for her kindness and devotion in providing round-the-clock care to Marie during her final days, and a grateful appreciation of the excellent caretakers at the Fort Kent hospital and High View Manor nursing home.
