Obituary

Fort Kent---Marie A. Audibert Theriault, age 96, died in Frenchville, Maine on August 4, 2024.  She was born January 20, 1928, in Fort Kent, Maine, the daughter of Joseph and Esther Michaud Audibert.  For 77 years Marie was happily married to the love of her life, Lucien Theriault. Together they had three wonderful children:  Mae Cooke, Beth Tobin and Carl Theriault.  Marie attended St. Agatha convent school for 4 years and graduated from Fort Kent High School in 1947.  Shortly after, on their honeymoon they bought a small house trailer that became their family home for the next five years while Lucien was in college at University of Maine Orono and Marie was busy taking various courses at UMO and taking care of the oldest daughter Mae.  In the summer the family would move their trailer back to Fort Kent next to her mother's house while Lucien worked as an electrician in town.  During their time at UMO Marie easily made many new friends.  One special friend got her involved in a sewing class. This experience was the foundation of her lifelong passion for sewing, which led to her making all of her beautiful garments and most of her children's clothes.  In 1953, after moving to their first home that was not on wheels in Holyoke, MA, their second child, Beth, was born.  Their third child, Carl, was born in 1955.  A while after that Marie's mother, who was left alone after bringing up her family, came to live with them until she needed nursing home care.  Marie took very good care of her Mom for many years.  Marie's outgoing nature made it easy for her to make many lifelong friends.  Her home was always open to friends and family, and all enjoyed her great cooking and warm hospitality.  Having a swimming pool at the house was always a great opportunity for Marie to have lots of fun with neighborhood children and family members.  Marie and her family moved to Chesterland and later Chardon, Ohio for a new job opportunity for her husband in 1969.  Marie was never one to waste an opportunity to help where help was needed, which led her to start a business with her daughter, Beth, making and selling children's clothing.  Again, she made many new friends, one who even came from Kansas to visit her when she and Lucien moved back to northern Maine in 1993.  Once back in Maine she reconnected with old friends and was a real contributor to the Biathlon Competition events as the leader of "The Angels of Mercy," where she assisted exhausted athletes as they collapsed at the finish line.  Marie was also available to serve her church and was a very devout follower of her faith.  Marie, along with Lucien, served various community organizations as exemplified by the reception of the following awards:  Distinguished Service Award from the University of Maine, Fort Kent, and the 2001 Citizenship Award from the Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce.  Marie/Mom/Memere will be greatly missed by her many friends and especially her family.  She is survived by her beloved husband, Lucien and her three children, Mae Cooke and husband John, Beth Tobin and husband Ben, and Carl Theriault and wife Pat, also her seven grandchildren, Derek and Kristen Abraham, Andrew, Jeremy and Eamon Tobin, and Jean Luc and Joseph Theriault as well as seven great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her parents and siblings: Phillip, Raynold, Sister Cecile, Arthur, Roger, August, Michael, Joseph, Louis, Alice, Robert, Vin and Cynthia and great grandson Jacob Granberg.  Friends may call at Lajoie Funeral home, Fort Kent on Tuesday, August 6 from 6-8PM.  There will be no visiting hours the morning of the Mass on Wednesday.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday August 7 at 10AM at St. Louis Catholic Church in Fort Kent.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to: Jalbert Youth Ski Program c/o Fort Kent Outdoor Center, PO Box 541, Fort Kent ME 04743.
