Fort Kent --- Maurice S. Rioux, 83, passed away September 23, 2019 at his residence in Fort Kent. He was born in Fort Kent March 21, 1936, the son of Romeo and Regina (Michaud) Rioux. Upon graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Helena (Belanger) on August 11th, 1955. After a brief attempt at employment in Connecticut, he returned to Fort Kent and began his long and fruitful career as a retail grocer. He started as a clerk and meat cutter at Soucy's Cash Market on West Main Street, became store manager of Soucy's Economat on East Main Street, and eventually realized his dream of owning his own market when he and his wife opened Rioux's Superette on West Main Street which they operated for many years. Upon successfully passing the civil service exam, "Moe" began his second career as a rural mail carrier with the US Postal service retiring after 20 years of service. After retirement, he took a job as a transport driver with Forest Hill Manor, a job he claimed was the most fun job he ever had. Moe was very active in the community having served as President of the Lion's Club, Chief Ranger of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly #352, member of the Fort Kent Knights of Columbus Council #1934, , and President of the Fort Kent Chamber of Commerce. He received the District Award of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America, a Service Award from St. Louis Parish in Fort Kent, and a Distinguished Service Award from Ambulance Inc. for his work as an EMT with the local ambulance service. He spent many years with the Maine Army National Guard and was a member of the Martin-Klein American Legion Post 133. He will also be fondly remembered for his comedic roles in the Fort Kent Lion's Variety Show. Maurice was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Lewelyn and Clinton; one sister, Louella (Paradis); and one son, Gregory. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years; his sister Priscilla and her husband Leonard Dumond; his sister Diane and her husband, Leo Collin; his son Bruce and his wife, Julie; his son, James and his wife Patricia; his son, Dr. Timothy Rioux and his wife Jane; his son Anthony and his partner Cindy; 11 grandchildren; Michelle and her husband James Dunning, Stefanie and her husband, Jeremy Foster, Kate and her husband Mikeal Mercedes, Elyse Rioux, Michael and his wife Marlee, Nathaniel Rioux, Andrew Rioux, Alex Rioux and his wife Caitlin, Matthew Rioux, Elizabeth "Libby" Rioux, and Daniel Rioux; 3 great grandchildren; Annie Foster, Sawyer Foster, and Noah Dunning; and several nieces and nephews. Helena and the family would like to express their deep appreciation for the care given to Maurice in his final months by the Northern Light Homecare and Hospice, Valley Home Health Services, and Aroostook Home Health Service teams. Your exceptional care and thoughfulness will be fondly remembered always. Visitation will be at the Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home in Fort Kent on Friday, September 27, 2019 from 6-8pm and from 9-9:45am the morning of the service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, September 28 at 10am the St. Louis Catholic Church in Fort Kent. Burial will be at the St. Louis Cemetery immediately following the Funeral service.
