IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Merton R.
Morrison
December 21, 1931 – May 30, 2025
St. Francis--- Merton Morrison passed peacefully on May 30, 2025, at the age of 93. He was born one of nine children to Gilbert and Sadie Morrison on December 21, 1931, and lived his entire life in St. Francis, Maine, where he was a fixture in the community.
From a young age, he enjoyed working with teams of horses in the woods and farming with his father. At age 11, Merton experienced a disabling accident which resulted in a prolonged hospital stay. While his disability was life-changing, he did not let it define his life and he went on to manage his own potato growing operation, then moved on to raising beef cattle with abundant hay and grain fields.
Merton especially respected traditional aspects to rural life and felt most at home with horses and classic farm machinery. He treated family and friends to rides with horse and sleigh. He was happy to share his garden vegetables. If asked, Merton always made his time and resources available to neighbors in need.
Merton was a member of the St. Paul's Congregational Church and an esteemed member of the Fort Kent Masonic Lodge. In his later years, he was known to relax on the front porch of his home inviting many friends and neighbors to stop by for the stories he loved to tell.
Merton married Phoebe McBreairty of Allagash, Maine, in 1955 and they celebrated 65 years together in 2020. Merton is predeceased by his wife, Phoebe (2020) and his son, Randall (1999).
Merton is survived by his children, Warren Morrison of St. Francis, Maine; James Morrison of Miami, Florida; and Julie Morrison, Kelly Mauldin and grandson, Nathan Morrison, of Stone Mountain, Georgia.
A special note of thanks to the caring staff at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.
