Obituary

Owen Rollin Haley, Jr., known to friends and loved ones as "Ron," died peacefully at the age of 87 on January 13, 2025, at Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent. His loving wife of 60 years, Jeannine (Vaillancourt) Haley was at his side.  Together, they battled his Parkinson's Disease for nearly two decades. Ron was born on February 7, 1937, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts to Owen Rollin Haley, Sr. and Rosalie (Pendergast) Haley.

Ron is survived by four adoring children, Laurie Allen and her husband, Jay, of Dover, Massachusetts, Kevin Haley and his wife, Karen Jordan, of Cumberland Foreside, Scott Haley and his wife Jocelyn (Dow) of Fort Kent, and Kristen Chamberlain and her husband, Will, of Farmingdale. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law Daniel Vaillancourt and his wife, Rollande (Cyr), and their family, who were very dear to him.

He was blessed with 10 grandchildren: Elizabeth Allen Mahan and her husband Owen, Charles Allen, Meredith Allen, Campbell Belisle Haley and his wife Danielle Perry, Abigail Belisle Haley, Sophie Belisle Haley and her husband, Ryan Ashworth, Jonathan Haley, Liam Chamberlain, Charlotte Crist and Will Crist.

Raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Ron graduated from Classical High School where he read voraciously and excelled in track and field. Known in the hallways as "Haley the Hurdler," he also became a speedy halfback on the football team, leaping over opponents on running plays.

He continued his studies and athletic pursuits at Colby College, where he ran track and received a B.A. in History in 1958. After a few years of teaching, he went on to earn a Master of Education degree at the University of Maine in Orono.  He taught History at Fort Kent Community High School for 35 years and retired in 1997.  He headed the Social Studies department for many years and shepherded generations of students through this formative stage of life.  He also enjoyed teaching night courses for many years at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone.

Ron grew to love his small town. He taught with a cohort of young colleagues who became lifelong friends. He held leadership roles in community organizations, such as Jaycees, the Lions Club, the local library board, and the Knights of Columbus. He also served as moderator at town meetings.

Ron's loved ones will miss his wit and charm, and the twinkle of his blue eyes. He leaves a considerable legacy as he inspired both his children and his students with his love of reading and music, and his vast knowledge of the history of the world and its great conflicts.  Always an avid golfer, may he find peace on the back nine.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at St. Louis Church in Fort Kent.  Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, January 17, 2025, at Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Parkinson's Foundation, 5757 Waterford District Drive, Suite 310, Miami, FL 33126, or visit https://www.parkinson.org/
