Van Buren & Hamlin--- Rene O. Levasseur, 84, died peacefully Friday, October 3, 2014 at a Van Buren healthcare facility. He was born April 21, 1930 in Van Buren, the son of the late Eddie and Alma (Cyr) Levasseur. He attended Husson College for a short time before returning to Hamlin to run the Levasseur family potato farm, for the majority of his life. In addition to farming, he was a potato inspector for the State of Maine. Rene was a parishioner of St. Bruno-St. Remi Church, a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #1635, Fourth Degree Assembly and a former Selectman for the Town of Hamlin. He also was a long standing member of Maine Potato Growers. He was an avid pilot who enjoyed the sights of the St. John River Valley and loved traveling with his wife. He is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Rachel (Boucher) Levasseur of Hamlin; two children, Joan Ramsay of Addison and Richard T. Levasseur and his wife Julie of Levant; two sisters, Annette Harmon and her husband Thomas of Caribou and Eileen Levasseur and her husband Jan Slusmon of Burlington, VT; one daughter-in-law, Terry Levasseur; two sisters-in-law, Delores Levasseur and Lena Levasseur; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren, Trisha, Jacob, Andrew, Ranee and Scott; three great grandchildren, Cara, Shawn and Elana; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Rene is predeceased by a son, Robert Levasseur, a grandson, Shawn Levasseur, and four brothers, Hermon, Gerald, Victor and Eddie Levasseur Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30AM on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Van Buren. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and Tuesday morning 9:30-11:00AM at Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
