Obituary

Robert "Bob" S. Corey, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 11, 2018 with his family by his side. Bob was born in Portland, Maine on June 2, 1927, the son of Nellie (Harrington) Corey and James "Ottie" Corey. He embarked on what would become his lifelong career in the jewelry business at 11 years old working for Day's Jewelers. At 17 he enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served as a military policeman stationed in Japan after World War II. He was very proud of being a Marine and credited the "Corps" for molding the character that made him so successful as a father, husband, friend, and businessman.  At the completion of his military service, Robert returned to Portland, and at 19 was assigned to open and manage Day's Jewelers in Caribou, Maine. There he met his sweetheart for life, Enid Marie Sleeper; they were married in 1950.  In 1955, Bob and Enid Corey moved to Madawaska where they opened Robert's Jewelry Store. This was an interesting challenge for them because, at the time, French was the predominant language in the Northern Maine community and the young couple spoke only English.  It is often said that Bob Corey possessed a magical quality of being able to communicate with his eyes. The Corey's raised 7 children in Madawaska where the family grew up working together in the jewelry store.  Bob Corey lived life for his family.  He relished spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their summer home on Long Lake in Sinclair, Maine.  He loved his hunting trips with the guys and his final trip to the Arctic with his sons and grandsons. Bob was a truly honorable man, a devout Catholic who was very much in touch with his heart.  He often sang and recited poetry. He will be particularly missed for his wit and humor, always finding goodness and kindness in life and in people. He was a true patriot and enjoyed sharing stories of his military service; he was so proud to be a lifetime member of The American Legion.  He leaves behind his precious wife of 67 years, Enid Marie and their seven children; Jeff and his wife Kathy, Jolene and her husband James Cleland, Jean and her husband David Foster, Jayne Johnston, Robert and his wife Sylvie, James and his fiancée, Amy Schmidt, Anne and her husband Douglas Cyr. He was particularly proud of his 14 grandchildren; Emily, Erin, Joseph, Bill, Maria, Leah, Amber, Corey, Jeffery, Sam, Alex, Emilia, James and Matthew. He was great-grandfather to Lucas, Lydia, Cameron, Maxwell and Claire. Robert was pre-deceased by his brother Earl, and 3 sisters Mamie Graffam, Nonie Graffam and Dolly Sills and his beloved grandson, Robert Foster.  The Corey family would like to express their sincere thanks to Alex, of Visiting Nurses of Aroostook, for his professional, kind and compassionate care. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Madawaska.  Family and friends may offer their condolences from 8:30am until 9:45am on Saturday prior to the service at Lajoie Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Robert Corey to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church memorial fund, 309 St Thomas Street  Suite 103, Madawaska, ME. 04756.
