Obituary

Fort Kent---Sharon Moseley Johnson, 86, of Fort Kent, Maine died on May 20, 2025, surrounded by loving family at her home from a long illness, or - as she said wryly - "after succumbing to the serious emotional distress from the 2024 presidential election."  Sharon was born August 9, 1938 in McKinney, Texas to Wendell Holmes "Pete" and Ruth Moseley. She married a preacher, raised a family during the tumultuous '60s, '70s and '80s, and earned her Master of Science in Information Science. Sharon was a dedicated mother, talented scholar and an independent spirit. One of the key driving forces in her life was a desire to be debt free and to be sure she left her children free of debt. In many ways she was successful. Just before her divorce, Sharon moved to Fort Kent to work at Blake Library at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. She rose to the position of Dean of Information Services after shepherding UMFK through the early years of networked information technology that exploded at the end of the Twentieth Century. This challenge, as well as the death of her parents, changed her life.  Sharon was a clannish woman, and she treated anyone lucky enough to be a part of her inner circle as if they were her own family. This especially included her staff at the library and information services, which she defended fiercely, and often spoke of with affection and pride. She was also proud of her family, and she was a proud Democrat.  Sharon felt that Jung's collective unconscious was the most understandable depiction of God, but loved religious spirituals and all folk music. Her favorite song was Will the Circle Be Unbroken.  In recent years, Sharon had been making a digital archive of family records and documents, preserving family history. Her daughter said her mother always strived for a Norman Rockwell family but never quite got there.  Sharon is survived by her son Richard Edwin Johnson and wife Susan, daughter Sofia Lorraine Birden and husband Andrew, son Arlen Dogen Hall Johnson and wife Kyla Collings; brother-in-law, George Angle, and brother Wendell Moseley and wife Pam; nieces Carol Mapp, Julie Pate, and Natalie Craver-Coleman; nephews Clay and Neil Moseley; grandchildren Richard Clifton, Andrew Arlen Bulmaro, Joshua Dogan Samual, Christopher Sequoya Walker, Augustin Gantt, Egan Samuel, Amara Patram; great granddaughter Illa Elaine; and her caring friend Dave Hobbins.  She is predeceased by Dick Johnson, former husband; her parents Pete and Ruth Moseley; brother Jon Christopher Moseley; sister Joycelaine Angle and her dear friend and Boggle opponent Lowell Daigle.  A celebration of life will be held at the Fort Kent Public Library on Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 2 to 4pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family encourages everyone to contribute to the Southern Poverty Law Center or the UMFK Blake Library.
