Obituary

Fort Kent---Vanda Brown (Covelli) beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother, born January 1, 1932, passed away September 3, 2023, at the age of 91 in Fort Kent, Maine.  She is survived by her children Kathleen, John, Anne, Laura, Michael and Vanda Maria; her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchild; her brother, Orazio Covelli, and many nieces and nephews.  She is predeceased by her husband Ernest Brown and their two daughters Judith and Adrienne as well as three siblings Gina Drew, Anthony and Oresto Covelli.  Her parents were Ernesto and Matilda (Scaffaro) Covelli both Italian immigrants who came to U.S. in the 1920's where they met and married in New York.  Vanda raised 8 children, worked part time during many of those years and devoted her life to others. She earned her CNA, CMA and Activities Professional credentials and worked in the nursing home field for many years. She especially enjoyed being an Activities Professional. Vanda loved to make puns, play word games and puzzles. Her love of people, knowledge and language helped to define who she was. She enjoyed reading biographies, autobiographies and mystery novels. She was a strong, courageous, smart, and vibrant person.  Vanda and Ernest Brown married in November, 1951 in New York. In the early 1960's, Ernest was the victim of a hit and run accident which nearly killed him.  He spent 3 years in the Veterans Administration Hospital in the Bronx, NY where he had thirteen surgeries on his face and head.  Vanda persevered throughout that time to maintain her family and succeeded in keeping everything and everyone together.  Ernest and Vanda moved their family to Coldwater, KS in 1976 where their younger children grew up.  Sadly, in her later years she suffered from dementia.  In the last six months of her life, Vanda's dementia worsened.  She moved to Forest Hill nursing home in Fort Kent, ME where she left this world.  We are the poorer for her loss.  With love from us all, Mom, may you rest in peace. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Thank you to the staff of Forest Hill and Northern Maine Medical Center for their kind and professional care during such a difficult time.
