Obituary

FORT KENT AND MILFORD - Wayne E. Wilbur, 77, died peacefully at his residence in Milford, ME on April 5, 2022. He was born in Old Town, ME on October 25, 1944, the son of the late Stanley Wilbur, Sr., and Ruth Wilbur. He is survived by his two sons, Charlton and Anthony Wilbur; and his brothers, Ronald and Fernald Wilbur. He is predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Jean Wilbur, and his brother, Stanley Wilbur, Jr.
Throughout his life, Wayne dedicated himself to serving his country, his community, and his family. In 1963, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in order to become one of 'The Few and the Proud.' After achieving the rank of sergeant and serving one tour in Vietnam, he was honorably discharged and returned stateside to enroll in college. In 1968, he attended the University of Maine at Fort Kent for a degree in teaching and history. He met his wife Jean shortly after he began his freshman year when they were assigned as partners in a biology class. He taught elementary school history in Fort Kent for over a decade, and soon after took on the role of principal at Eagle Lake Elementary School. In the mid 1990s, he moved on from education to work for Century 21 after earning his real estate license. Over the last twenty years, he was proud to have helped Mainers navigate the home-buying process and find their new homes.
He was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family, his two cats (Mavie and Mindy), the outdoors, camping, traveling, the New England Patriots, buying and fixing up old cars, and countless finished (and unfinished) home repair projects. Ever the optimist, he always tried to find the solutions to every problem and was quick to provide words of encouragement or advice to help anyone around him who needed it. He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who knew him.
Two wake services are being scheduled to represent the two communities that Wayne was a member of throughout his life - one in Old Town and one in Fort Kent. Old Town: Saturday, April 9, between 2-5 p.m. at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main Street, Old Town, and Fort Kent: Sunday, April 10, between 3-6 p.m. at Lajoie-Daigle Funeral Home, 14 E. Main St., Fort Kent. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery later this spring on May 13.
