Obituary

Y olande Therese Cyr, beloved wife of the late Philip Louis Cyr of Madawaska, passed away on March 10, 2018 surrounded by her daughters at a Ft . Kent health care facility. She was born November 30, 1927 in Edmundston, New Brunswick, one of six children of Edmond and Jeanne Pelletier. After graduating from Cormier High School, she went to work for a local construction firm. Her passion for the building trades and her love of people led her to build the Gateway Motel in Madawaska in 1958. Later, a restaurant and lounge were added and became famous and popular throughout the St. John Valley. She thoroughly enjoyed this enterprise which she managed with the warmest hospitality for both tourists and traveling sales people who returned again and again. In 1975, the Gateway was sold, and she went on to operate the Gateway Ocean Inn in Belfast. Yolande always had a positive and bright outlook on life, this despite suffering from the debilitating effects struggling with MS for over 57 years. Her infectious laugh and ever-present smile meant that you were a stranger to her but once, after that you would be a friend for life. After retirement, Yolande moved from Maine to Florida to Tennessee and each new home brought new adventures.  Yolande was preceded in death by three sisters: Carmen Netherland, Yvette Fournier and Helene St. Pierre; one brother George Pelletier. She leaves one brother, Dr. Louis Pelletier (and his wife Helene) of Notre Dame du Mont Carmel, Quebec. Also, she leaves the two joys of her life: her daughters Elizabeth Legrain and husband Xavier of Washington, D.C. and Normandy, France, and Patricia Cyr Watlington and husband Rob of Chattanooga, TN. She was most proud of her three grandchildren who brought her much joy, Anaelle and Nicolas Legrain, and Serena Legere. Yolande will always be remembered by her countless friends and remaining relatives including Paul Fournier, who was like a son, and Dr. Erik St. Pierre and his wife Catherine. Donations in her memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in New York or Crosswinds Residential Care Activity Fund. The family wishes to thank the staff at Crosswinds for the loving and compassionate care shown to Yolande and her family these past six years. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to LaJoie funeral home in Madawaska. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on March 17, 2018 at the St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Madawaska, Maine. Family and friends may call from 9-9: 45am the morning of the service.
